The Capital Times and Others
Support Edwards for President

MILWAUKEE (Feb. 14, 2004) - As Wisconsinites across the state continue to line up behind John Edwards, the Edwards for President campaign in Wisconsin announced today that State Senator Robert Wirch (Kenosha), State Representative Josh Zepnick (Milwaukee), and former State Senate Majority Leader David Helbach have endorsed Edwards for President. Wirch, Zepnick and Helbach join ten current state legislators and thousands of Wisconsinites who support Edwards' positive, optimistic vision and his plans to strengthen our economy and protect American jobs.

"Our campaign is gaining momentum all over Wisconsin. The people of Wisconsin are ready to change this country," Edwards said. "Senator Wirch, Representative Zepnick, and Senator Helbach are great additions to our already strong team of Wisconsin leaders. Together, we're going to build an America that works for all of us again."

Senator Wirch represents the 22nd District (Kenosha) in the state Senate, and was first elected to that office in 1996.

Representative Zepnick represents the 9th District (Milwaukee) in the state Assembly, and was first elected to that office in 2002.

Helbach served in the state Assembly from 1978 to 1983 and in the state Senate from 1983 to 1995. He served as the state Senate Majority Leader from 1991 to 1993.

Madison's Capital Times, which describes itself as "Wisconsin's Progressive Newspaper," also endorsed Edwards for president. The Times specifically cites Edwards' optimistic vision, ability to beat George Bush, and focus on the issues of trade and jobs as reasons why Wisconsin's progressives should back him in the presidential primary on Tuesday.

"North Carolina Senator John Edwards is the candidate who offers the best combination of electability and vision. And it is that combination that makes him uniquely able not merely to replace Bush but to place America on a radically different, and better, course," writes the Times' editorial board.

"In Wisconsin, Edwards has made trade issues central to his campaign. And his message has begun to resonate with voters in Janesville, Racine, La Crosse and other communities that have been devastated by the failed economic policies of an administration that cares more about Wall Street than Main Street," continues the endorsement. "To a far greater extent than any of the other candidates, Edwards has addressed the devastation of rural America by trade, tax, and antitrust policies that favor corporate agribusiness over working farmers."

"We believe Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance of securing his party's nomination this year," the editorial board writes. "Edwards likes to tell audiences that, if Democrats give him a chance to take on Bush, he will give them the White House. That's a big promise, but we would not support John Edwards if we did not think he could keep it."

Edwards also received an endorsement by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel late in the Wisconsin Primary campaign.  It is the state's largest circulated nespaper.
