Lt. Governor Lawton Endorses
and Campaigns for John Kerry

Madison, WI  (Feb. 14, 2004) – Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton, who endorsed John Kerry for President today, joined Vanessa Kerry and supporters around the Badger State to rally Wisconsin Women for Kerry. At leadership meetings in Eau Claire, Green Bay, Madison, La Crosse and Wausau today, supporters focused on mobilizing their communities for Tuesday’s election. In Madison, Vanessa Kerry energized local women talking about her father’s unparalleled record working on behalf of American women. Wisconsin Women for Kerry includes a broad coalition of local elected officials, firefighters, teachers and other community leaders. Lawton is the first woman elected Lieutenant Governor in Wisconsin.

“I am honored to have the support of Barbara Lawton and the support of women across the state of Wisconsin,” said Kerry. “In case after case, President Bush’s actions have made American women less safe and less secure - on the job and on the streets. As president, I will put American government and our legal system back on the side of women. I will stand up for their security, ensure their safety, support their rights, and guarantee their dignity. This nation can do no less.”

Lieutenant Governor Lawton said, “I am proud to support John Kerry for President. As Democrats we are united in the fight against George Bush and I’m proud to join ranks with other former Clark supporters as Democrats here and around the country come together. I have decided to support John Kerry today because I believe that he is the candidate with the courage to fight for what’s right. Over and over again he has battled to uphold a woman’s right to choose and the rights of women in America and across the world. He has the best plan to ensure that our families have access to affordable health care, quality education and an economy that puts people to work. Wisconsin families will be a lot better off with John Kerry as their president.”

Across the state, Wisconsin women are finding Kerry’s candidacy a welcome alternative to the status quo. As a prosecutor in Boston, John Kerry established one of the country’s first offices to assist rape victims. In the Senate, he co-sponsored and helped pass the Violence Against Women Act and worked to pass the Family and Medical Leave Act to help working parents balance work and family.
