Rep. Shirley Krug Drops Out of Congressional Bid Too:
Former Leader of Assembly
Democrats Quits Running

MILWAUKEE (July 9, 2004) - Wisconsin's 12th Assembly District Representative has dropped out of a bid for election to the U.S. House of Representatives.  Shirley Krug of Milwaukee, issued a statement today that went even further.  Krug says she is also not seeking re-election to the Assembly seat, noting her retirement from elected office.

“Today, I’ve decided to end my campaign for the 4th Congressional District seat," Krug stated.  "I will not seek re-election to my 12th Assembly District seat," she added.

Krug was Leader of Assembly Democrats for a time.  She was replaced as Leader by party peers following the Year 2000 Assembly races.   Democrats selected Representative Spencer Black to replace Krug in the Minority Leader position.

“As I look back at my 20 years of public service, I am proud of my many great accomplishments," Krug stated during her announcement.

"My Milwaukee Neighborhood Schools Initiative created over 11,000 new classroom seats for the Milwaukee Public Schools without raising property taxes or state spending.  I am also particularly proud of my efforts to protect victims of domestic violence, prevent child abuse and neglect, improve mental health oversight and guard the Lincoln Creek Neighborhood from flooding.

"Serving my constituents has been a tremendous honor for me," she said.

”I will cherish all that I learned during this campaign and the new friends I made. I would like to say a special thank you to my supporters.

Krug had been in a Primary battle with another Democrat seeking the 4th Congressional seat until her announcement to drop out of the race.  Her opponenet says, “Representative Krug had a very successful career and represented the constituents of the 12th Assembly District with distinction."

Moore says "Representative Krug has been a very worthy opponent in the race for the 4th Congressional District Democratic Primary and has run a very issue oriented campaign."

Moore gave Krug strong praise for her years serving in the Assembly during a time that he served in the State Legislature, too.  "Krug has been a great public servant and a strong Democrat.  I wish my friend all the best in her future endeavors”.

Krug says she will continue activism in the community and looks forward to "focusing my efforts on assisting the Kerry-Edwards team and re-electing Russ Feingold to the U.S. Senate."
