Pharmacy Society Sends Letter To DOA and DHFS:
PSW Says Canadian Pharmacies
Continue Violations of State Agreement

MADISON ( July  8, 2004) - Despite a state memorandum citing otherwise, independent analysis by the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin (PSW) found the administration's latestreport from the Canadian pharmacies showed continued violation of the contractual agreement between the pharmacies and the state of Wisconsin.

The analysis shows that prescriptions shipped from Canadian pharmacies violated the state's agreement for the third time in as many reports.  Drugs were dispensed that were not deemed acceptable by the state and included on its web site list of approved drugs. Other drugs not approved by the FDA, nor included on the Web site list, were also dispensed by the Canadian pharmacies.

PSW's stand is that "the fact that the state did not recognize violations of its own agreement points to the complexity of the business and the need for legitimate regulation.

PSW has sent a letter outlining its complete review of the three Web site reports and its related concerns to Department of Administration Secretary Marc Marotta, as well as Health and Family Services Secretary Helene Nelson. A copy of the letter and the three reports are available at www.pswi.org/government/canada.htm.

The Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin supports efforts to enable pharmacies, licensed and regulated in the United States, to import prescription drugs from other countries through a secure and regulated system. Such a system of importation would provide consumers confidence in the integrity of their prescription drug products and enable them to receive the products from the local pharmacist they know and trust.

PSW is a statewide professional association that represents over 2,000 Wisconsin pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Wisconsin pharmacists dispense over five million prescriptions each month to consumers and have repeatedly been listed by national polling organizations as one of the most trusted professions in the United States.
