Soldiers Return to Studies
MADISON (May 26, 2006) – A bill authored by state Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) to ensure that Wisconsin students returning from active military duty may reenroll in college and receive the same priority in registering for classes had they not been deployed will be signed into law. The Governor signs Senate Bill 436 at a ceremony at the state capitol Memorial Day.
“Many Wisconsin soldiers are students,” said Lazich. “When duty calls, these brave young men and women unselfishly answer the call without regard for their personal lives. Students put their education on hold to make tremendous sacrifices. We should not penalize our veterans for serving our country.”
A returning soldier contacted Lazich and expressed frustration that upon his return to Wisconsin he was unable to get the classes necessary to graduate. Lazich was both surprised and disappointed that a young man who just put his life on the line was put in this position.
“We owe returning soldiers our deepest gratitude and appreciation. To deny soldiers’ pursuit of education because they heroically served our country is totally unacceptable.”
Senate Bill 436 has the support of the University of Wisconsin System. The UW System has publicly stated that the bill “is very much in keeping with the UW’s long-standing commitment to its men and women who serve in The U.S. Armed Forces in times of conflict.”
“I am grateful to the University of Wisconsin System for their support of the legislation and even more indebted to the men and women who choose to fight and serve for us,” said Lazich.
