Representative Pocan Says Wisconsin Can't Afford 4-More-Years:
Pocan: A Vote For Ralph Nader
Could Be Disaster For Wisconsin

MADISON (Sept. 7, 2004) – One of Wisconsin’s leading progressive voices is urging his fellow Wisconsin progressives to unite around the candidacy of John Kerry and John Edwards. State Rep. Mark Pocan of Madison says that Wisconsin can’t afford four more years of George Bush, but that’s exactly what might happen if progressives vote for Ralph Nader in November.

“Four more years of George Bush and Dick Cheney would be a disaster for America, and a disaster for Wisconsin,” said Pocan. “The only way we can avoid that disaster is by uniting behind the candidates who can beat Bush and Cheney in November: John Kerry and John Edwards.

Pocan noted that Kerry and Edwards both have a long history of fighting for issues such as health care reform, workers rights and protecting the environment. “A Kerry-Edwards administration will be like day and night compared to what Bush and Cheney have done over the past four years. Working families will once again have a friend in the White House, something they have sorely missed since Bush and Cheney took office.”

“Ralph Nader has accomplished remarkable things in his career,” said Pocan. “But his candidacy in 2004 puts many of those accomplishments in jeopardy. George Bush and Dick Cheney are actively rolling back many of the environmental and consumer protection measures that Ralph Nader fought so hard to create. It isn’t hard to guess what Bush and Cheney would do with another four years in office, especially when they would no longer need to be concerned with appearing moderate enough to win reelection.”

Pocan, one of the most progressive members of the Wisconsin Assembly, was elected to fill Tammy Baldwin’s seat in 1998. He currently serves as co-chairperson of the Midwest Progressive Elected Officials Network, and has been a vocal advocate of progressive legislation on issues ranging from health care to campaign finance reform to civil rights.

Assembly Democratic Leader Jim Kreuser has announced the appointment of Representative Mark Pocan of Madison to the Joint Committee on Finance. Representative Pocan joins Representative Pedro Colon of Milwaukee who was also recently appointed to represent Assembly Democrats.

“Mark Pocan is a small business owner, a former county board supervisor, and a proven leader. The level of commitment he has shown over the last six years to his district, to the legislature, and to the state, is exemplary,” said Rep. Kreuser.

During the last legislative session, Representative Pocan’s committee service included Assembly Committees on Audit, Campaigns and Elections, Colleges and Universities, Criminal Justice and Corrections, and the Joint Committee on Audit. In addition, he authored legislation to prevent the legislature from passing a budget that would increase the state’s structural deficit, as well as a bill to compel the state to require contractual services purchased to be performed within the United States.
