PPAWI Says Wisconsin's Pro-Choice Leaders Are Needed:
Planned Parenthood Applauding
Feingold, Baldwin and Kind Wins

MADISON, WI (Nov. 4, 2004) – Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) are applauding the re-election of pro-health care advocates Senator Russ Feingold, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and Congressman Ron Kind. In addition, PPAWI extended warm congratulations to state Senator Gwen Moore, a long-time advocate for women’s health during her sixteen years in the Wisconsin legislature, who overwhelming won the open 4th congressional seat in Milwaukee. PPAWI affirmed its determination to continue fighting forward for women’s reproductive rights alongside these leaders.

“All four of the victorious congressional delegates are strong supporters of access to preventative health care,” stated Chris Taylor, political director for PPAWI. “With their help, PPAWI and America’s pro-choice majority will forge ahead in the fight for women’s reproductive health and access to health care.”

The steadfast commitment to women’s health by these pro-choice national leaders will be greatly needed in the wake of George W. Bush’s re-election. Over the past four years, the Bush administration has:

· Attempted to rescind insurance coverage for prescription birth control for federal employees

· Re-written government documents to downplay the effectiveness of condoms in preventing AIDS

· Appointed medical “experts” to influential positions who oppose the use of birth control in any circumstance

President Bush ran and won his campaign based on issues of national security, and unfortunately, the issue of reproductive health was largely obscured. Consequently, these results do not serve as a mandate by the American people to reduce women’s access to reproductive health care. PPAWI vows to redouble its efforts to inform and mobilize the people of Wisconsin to protect and enhance women’s access to reproductive health care and information.

“We are deeply disappointed that President Bush will now have four more years to continue his assault on reproductive health care for women,” stated Taylor.

Taylor noted that America will now face decisive battles, including the future of legal abortion, and access to birth control and medically accurate sex education.

“Under President Bush’s watch, we could see a day when the women of Wisconsin are thrown in prison for ending a pregnancy, even if they are victims or rape or incest, or their health is at risk,” stated Taylor. “We will fight these and many other battles until reproductive rights are understood as fundamental human rights that can never be jeopardized by the outcome of any election.”
