Green calls Saudi-led effort
to reduce oil supply “outrageous”

WASHINGTON ( April 7, 2004) – Following an OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) agreement last week to cut daily oil production by 2.5 million barrels, U.S. Rep. Mark Green (R-Green Bay) demanded a meeting with Saudi officials Tuesday to discuss the decision, which Green says will only exacerbate the problem of rising gas prices in the U.S.

“At a time when folks across the country are getting pinched at the pump, the Saudis and OPEC are thumbing their noses at American motorists and actively working to cut oil production,” Green said. “The Saudis, who for years have talked about their friendship with the United States owe the American people an explanation.”

As a member of the House International Relations Committee, Green often meets with foreign leaders and ambassadors, and helps influence U.S. foreign policy decisions.

“With the summer travel season just around the corner, action must be taken now to rein in soaring gas prices, and bring some much-needed relief to Wisconsin boaters and motorists,” Green said. “Cutting the supply of oil will only exacerbate the problem of high gas prices, and I intend to make crystal clear to the Saudis that we’re not happy about it.”
