Republican Party Chair Graber Responds To Sen. Robson:
RPW Spokesperson Says
Accusations Not "Reality"
Madison, WI (Oct., 18, 2005) -- On the heels of a recent news investigation suggesting pay-to-play tactics by Governor James E. Doyle, as well as a report showing more than $200,000 in out-of-state campaign contributions to him during the first half of this year, Senate Democratic Leader Judy Robson took the liberty today to blame Republicans for the results of a poll that shows most Wisconsin residents don’t think elected officials represent their interests.

According to Robson, the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute (WPRI) poll---which makes no mention about any particular party---supports her claims that Republicans “are following an agenda driven by narrow special interests.”

“It is ironic that Sen. Robson would attack Republicans for catering to special interests when Governor Doyle, the leader of her party, repeatedly demonstrates that he governs according to the wishes of WEAC and major donors,” said Rick Graber, chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

In the last state budget, Governor Doyle rewarded WEAC by increasing spending on schools by $861 million while raiding funding for Medicaid, leaving the state’s most vulnerable citizens at risk. Republicans tried to override Doyle’s vetoes of Medicaid spending but failed to win support from Democrats in the Senate.

Sen. Robson also had five opportunities to provide taxpayers with a real property tax freeze plan and voted against it each time. Wisconsin is the fifth most heavily taxed state in the country.

Again, following Doyle’s lead, Robson has failed on the issue of photo ID, voting against it each time it is proposed by the legislature, despite consistent polls showing widespread favor of the measure. The most recent poll, released by WPRI last week, shows 69% of those surveyed were in favor of it, while 63% were in favor of a Constitutional amendment making it a requirement.

“She’s against issues that are most important to residents, like property tax relief, providing funding for nursing homes and insuring the integrity of Wisconsin’s election system,” said Graber. “Sen. Robson might want to re-examine whose priorities she’s in favor of because clearly, it isn’t the citizens of Wisconsin.”
