U W - Stevens Point Hires Al Thompson As Student Affairs Vice Chancellor

WISCREPORT.COM (08/19/2010) - The United States Veterans Administration (VA) says it will open a new Vet Center site in Wausau, Wisconsin, as well as add additional counselors at the Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay Vet Centers to help process cases and expedite assistance to veterans. Wisconsin currently has a low number of Vet Centers compared to other states like West Virginia or Hawaii that have a smaller veteran population than Wisconsin, but have nine and seven Vet Centers respectively. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (06/27/08) - Democratic Presidential Primary rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton made a show of unity today (Friday, June 27th) in a community aptly named Unity, New Hampshire. It was the first joint public appearance since what some observers called a divisive Democratic primary race ended. The campaign speeches in Unity was the start of Hillary's assurance she will work toward Obama becoming the next president of the United States, even though for awhile it seemed to some, she might hold a grudge. The site was created in 1994 by David Merchant as a project for Dr. Gretchen Whitney's Information Network Applications Class, School of Information Sciences, University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN. The website, usmemorialday.org, was created to help promote the return of the original intent and meaning back to Memorial Day and to provide an online community for people to share their feelings, pride, respect and honor for those who gave their all for the country. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (04/14/08) - U.S. Senators Herb Kohl (D-WI), Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) have introduced the Illegal Garnishment Prevention Act. The bill would prevent the U.S. Department of Treasury from using direct deposit for Social Security beneficiaries until they put a stop to the illegal garnishment of government benefits from the bank accounts of private citizens. It is already illegal to have banks deduct money from federal funds in personal bank accounts to turn over to creditors, but, it is taking place anyway far too often. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (04/11/08) - The Dunn County Republican Party annual Lincoln Day Dinner keynote speaker will by Scott Harold Southworth who was recently honored as a CNN Hero. Major Southworth, who currently serves as Juneau County District Attorney, is also a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard. After serving in the Military Police in Iraq, Southworth returned to Iraq to adopt a disabled Iraqi orphan. The Southworth story has been told to Montel Williams, Oliver North, and others on television. He is also remembered for the Supreme Court Southworth Decision. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (04/03/08) - Fourteen administration officials and airport representatives gathered Wednesday in a closed meeting to explain to Congressional Representative Tom Petri of Wisconsin why 204 Marines and soldiers returning from Iraq were barred from the Oakland, California airport terminal on September 27th, 2007. The military personnel felt slighted when they were deplaned onto a grass median between runways instead of allowed to taxi to the terminal and deplane there. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (03/19/08) - The war in Iraq is costing Wisconsin residents alone, millions of dollars, no, billions of dollars, with a B, since the beginning of the hostile action five years ago. A group called Citizen Action of Wisconsin, estimates that in 2008, Wisconsin's share of the war will be One-Point-Three Billion additional dollars. The 2008 amount is based on Bush Administration and military proposals for additional outlays of funds to be funneled into the effort in Iraq this year. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/25/08) - The Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Tomah will receive $4.425 million from the 2008 VA Appropriations bill to complete a renovation of their facility. Democratic Congressional Representative Ron Kind of LaCrosse says the funding was made possible by the boost given to the Veterans Administration by the Democratic Congress, who this year provided the largest increase to the VA in its 77-year history with an allocation of $3.8 billion above what President Bush had requested. Another bill signed into law by Governor Doyle makes it possible for an elected official to not be paid for their services, if they wish to do so. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/5/07) - An attempt by the Wisconsin Impeachment Coalition to have the question of whether to impeach President George W. Bush and Vice President Cheney was not acted on by the Madison City Council yesterday. The coalition had urged the alderpersons to hold a city-wide referendum on the matter during the upcoming Presidential Preference Primary February 18th, 2008. The deadline for including impeachment on a ballot February 18th is January 9th, 2008. A spokesperson says it might be on the council's agenda at the council's January 8th meeting. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/4/07) - The Wisconsin Impeachment Coalition is calling for the Madison city council to introduce a resolution to place an impeachment referendum question on the Feb. 19th primary ballot. February 19, 2008 is the date of the Wisconsin Presidential Preference Primary. The Wisconsin Impeachment Coalition has gathered 9600 petition signatures in favor of impeachment. Polls show that up to 61 percent of the public in the country thinks President Bush should be impeached, and, two out of three want Vice President Cheney impeached. WISCREPORT.COM (10/20/07) - A man who became a World War II Prisoner of War after riding an airplane tail section to the ground because his parachute and body were riddled with bullet holes, is being honored for lifetime achievement. Eugene P. Moran of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin has been presented with the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs Lifetime Achievement Award in a ceremony at the National Guard Armory in Platteville. After returning to civilian life, among other things, he served 20 years as Fire Chief, and 12 years as a Crawford County Board Supervisor. (read more)...
