WISCREPORT.COM (04/22/2010) - A federal court has banned eight companies and their principals from selling credit repair and mortgage relief services, and ordered them to pay more than 7.5 million dollars for deceiving consumers throughout the United States. the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged seven of the companies and three officers with making false promises that they would improve consumers’ credit scores by removing negative information on credit reports. The latest Wisconsin Job Watch from COWS shows a continued slowing in the rate of job loss in Wisconsin, according to July 2009 data. However, Wisconsin has 137,000 fewer jobs than when the so-called recession started in December of 2007. Official election results show Iranian incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won 63 percent of the vote, compared to 34 percent for challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi, his main rival. An Iranian photographer on the scene of a protest rally over the election results said that armed members of a pro-government militia opened fire on the crowd today, killing at least one demonstrator. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (09/18/08) - Electric vehicle pioneer ZAP has announced that increasing demand has resulted in record August 2008 sales for its Advanced Technology Vehicle division, the most since ZAP's Xebra sedan and truck were launched in 2006. Unaudited sales for ZAP electric vehicles surged to $737,000 in August, versus $392,000 a year ago, an increase of $345,000 or 88 percent. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (08/16/08) - The Wisconsin BadgerCare Plus program is providing high-quality, comprehensive care to 77,000 Wisconsin residents, including over 50,000 children. The good news is that a recent study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation finds that chronically ill Wisconsin children in the BadgerCare Plus program receive the same access to health care services as children with private insurance. The new list will be sent to telemarketers on September 1, 2008. To make that list consumers must sign up before the end of August. Adding cell phone numbers to the Do Not Call list became possible by including it in a recent Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (05/12/08) - Several websites hosted by a Stevens Point, Wisconsin company were offline for most of the weekend through the morning hours of Monday, May 12, 2008. The websites are hosted by Cliksites Hosting, which is a service of Magicmedia Communications, Inc., a member of the Morbizco Media Group. Two of the sites affected were Clik2Go.com, which is an internet portal, internet access provider, and search engine service, and WisconsinReport.com. The problem seems to have been a technical issue in a recently installed server system that replaced the old system. All sites are now back online and available to the public. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (05/05/08) - Wisconsin Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass says the fourth Unclaimed Property Auction on eBay brought in over 10-thousand dollars from bids submitted from several areas of the United States. The auction concluded on Thursday at 6:00 pm with bids from locations in Wisconsin, Texas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Maryland. All of the 37 items up for bid sold totaling $10,119.02. The highest bid item was for a diamond engagement ring which sold for $4,383.33. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/21/08) - Democrats Abroad has announced that Senator Barack Obama has won the organization's Global Primary. Democrats Abroad is the official overseas branch of the U.S. Democratic Party. Obama received the yes nod from nearly 66 percent of the Democrats Abroad primary participants. Hillary Clinton received nearly 33 percent of those voting. The results mean that Obama will receive 2 and a half delegates, and Hillary will get 2 delegates. The company operates a website that offers firearms for sale. Authorities say the person who fired the shots that killed five people at Northern Illinois University on Valentines Day 2008 apparently made some purchases from the company's website. NewPage has also acquired Stora Enso mills in Wisconsin Rapids, Biron, Whiting and Stevens Point. Van Hollen joined attorneys general from 48 other states and the District of Columbia to announce that MySpace has agreed to significant steps to better protect children using its web site. When the restructuring of the operations of the agency is finished there will be regional offices located in Appleton-Green Bay, Eau Claire, Madison, Milwaukee, Wausau and Chicago. These regional offices are expected to continue providing comprehensive services to taxpayers. The regional system will rely heavily on new technology. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/6/07) - The Wisconsin Department of Justice has settled a consumer protection lawsuit against a Florida-based billing aggregator, ILD Telecommunications, Inc. The company allegedly had a role in placing charges on the telephone bills of Wisconsin businesses for internet services that the State alleges either were not authorized or that were obtained through deceptive telemarketing practices by Radical Persson, Inc., a California corporation. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (11/30/07) - While corporate income tax collections jumped 14.1 percent last year and individual income taxes were up 7.0 percent, Wisconsin sales taxes rose 0.8 percent, according to a new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX). Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the nonprofit WISTAX keeps Wisconsin citizens informed through nonpartisan research. WISTAX researchers cited several reasons for the lagging sales tax collections. WISCREPORT.COM (10/25/07) - Vonage and Verizon have announced they have agreed to resolve their dispute over patent rights. Verizon charged Vonage with infringing on three patents held by Verizon in the Vonage VoIP telephone process. Vonage says the cost of the settlement will be capped at a maximum of $32 million, in addition to the $88 million already accrued and held in escrow. The final terms of the resolution depends on how the Court of Appeals decides Vonage's pending petition for rehearing regarding two of the three Verizon patents. (read more)...
WISCREPORT.COM (10/17/07) - A repeat offender of internet offenses has been ordered to pay a penalty of 164 thousand dollars by the Federal Trade Commission. Defendant John Zaccarini stipulates that he was in contempt of the original FTC findings. In return for the stipulation, Zaccarini is required to pay the monetary amount, which is equal to the ill-gotten gains he made while being involved in the latest internet improprieties.
