Flag Day will be observed Monday, June 14th. Flag Day started in 1916 with a presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson to commemorate the date on which the Second Continental Congress voted to adopt the flag of the United States in 1777. WISCREPORT.COM (05/28/2010) - Memorial Day weekend is here and traffic on highways in many areas of the USA is heavier than usual, because in the minds of some,it has become a fun holiday. However it is more than that. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 31 in 2010). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (07/03/2009) - When we think of Fourth of July, of course, we think of fireworks. However, we must not forget the danger they pose to our eyes and vision. This Fourth, the Wisconsin Optometric Association (WOA) urges all citizens to use fireworks safely. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an estimated 1,400 fireworks-related eye injuries were treated in the one month surrounding July 4, 2007, nearly 22 percent of all fireworks-related injuries during that timeframe. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (11/28/08) - The day after Thanksgiving 2008 finds retailers in Wisconsin and around the country hoping that the traditional day that starts the Christmas shopping in earnest will be at least as affluent as usual. However, as the years go by, many shoppers are foregoing the hustle and bustle of shopping in stores in person. Many have opted to shop through the internet. Retail Decisions (ReD), a payment card issuer and world leader in payment card fraud prevention and payment processing, predicted a bustling Black Friday on November 28 with 10.00 am - 11.00 am being the busiest online shopping hour. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (11/12/08) - Wisconsin consumers need to be prepared for the possibility of a phone scam targeting the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday warns the Wisconsin Bankers Association (WBA). A similar fraud was perpetrated on Manitowoc County residents over the 2007 Thanksgiving holiday and potentially could victimize other Wisconsin residents. The same type of scam occurred recently in Northeastern Wisconsin. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (07/03/08) - Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Congress approved the wording of the Declaration on July 4th in that year. It became Independence Day in 1791, and wasn't a federal holiday until 1870 when congress made it an unpaid federal holiday. The site was created in 1994 by David Merchant as a project for Dr. Gretchen Whitney's Information Network Applications Class, School of Information Sciences, University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN. The website, usmemorialday.org, was created to help promote the return of the original intent and meaning back to Memorial Day and to provide an online community for people to share their feelings, pride, respect and honor for those who gave their all for the country. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/13/07) - Television fans gave studio moguls from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) an unexpected early Christmas present: more than half a million pencils. Over 200 fans and writers gathered in Johnny Carson Park in Burbank this week to transform a 20-foot long, five-foot-high wall of boxed pencils into six giant delivery baskets full of pencils. Pencils 2 Media Moguls was organized by UnitedHollywood.com. The website launched the pencil drive as a show of fan support for the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, now in its sixth week. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/8/07) - Last month was tied for the second safest month of November since World War II with November of 1982, 1998 and 2000. In November of this year (2007), 54 people died in 48 Wisconsin traffic crashes, according to preliminary statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The lowest total for November occurred in 1981 and 1991 with 50 traffic deaths. The deadliest month of November was in 1973 with 110 traffic deaths. WisconsinReport.com has more. (read more)...
WISCREPORT.COM (11/17/07) - Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA ). Hundreds of Americans are killed each year due to home cooking fires and thousands more are injured. Annually, cooking fires cause more than half a billion dollars in direct property damage to homes and the belongings inside. The Wisconsin Department of Commerce joins NFPA in encouraging the public to keep safety in mind when preparing holiday meals.
