WISCONSINREPORT.COM (09/18/08) - Electric vehicle pioneer ZAP has announced that increasing demand has resulted in record August 2008 sales for its Advanced Technology Vehicle division, the most since ZAP's Xebra sedan and truck were launched in 2006. Unaudited sales for ZAP electric vehicles surged to $737,000 in August, versus $392,000 a year ago, an increase of $345,000 or 88 percent. The Crane Conservation Act of 2008, H.R. 1771, was passed on May 21, 2008 with strong bipartisan support (304-118). A companion bill authored by Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), S. 1048, is pending in the Senate. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (05/02/08) - The University of Wisconsin - Madison Formula SAE team raced to first place at the inaugural Virginia International Raceway competition April 23-26. This was the first Formula SAE event to incorporate a road course that included significant elevation changes. The UW-Madison team, which received funding from the United Wisconsin Grain Producers, piloted its one-third-scale Indy-style car to victory while awing the spectators with unmatchable lap times. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (04/16/08) - Voters at this week’s Wisconsin Conservation Congress spring hearings approved the position of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau on all three questions of interest to farmers. The questions involved Deer Baiting and Feeding, Managed Forest Law Change, and Wolf Management. Citizens who attended April 14th hearings throughout the state supported the creation of a hunting season for wolves, banning deer baiting and feeding, and were against a proposal involving Managed Forest Land contracts that would essentially make it mandatory to allow public access to private lands. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/22/08) - Bush Administration claims that so-called competitive sourcing in the U.S. Forest Service saved money, are based on shoddy and misleading accounting, according to findings of a Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit released this week. The report indicates that Competitive Sourcing forces either the outsourcing of federal employees’ jobs or radical internal downsizing and reorganization. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/21/08) - Outsourcing government jobs to private companies may not be saving taxpayers money, as had been promised by the Bush administration. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released an audit, requested by Wisconsin's U.S. Senators Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl, and several other senators, on the competitive sourcing program at the United State Forest Service (USFS). The administration had promoted the outsourcing plan as a way to cut down on government spending, but, because complete data is not available, saving money in this instance, is unknown. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/17/07) - The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will hold animal health public hearings January 7th through the 10th. The hearings will be in regard to proposals that would streamline, clarify, and update Wisconsin's animal health regulations. The department proposals have a goal of protecting the state's livestock industry by better prevention and control of animal disease. The hearings will be held in Appleton, Madison and Eau Claire. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/8/07) - Research findings show that mid-range ethanol blends fuel mixtures with more ethanol than E10 but less than E85—can in some cases provide better fuel economy than regular unleaded gasoline, even in standard, non-flex-fuel vehicles. The new study, cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE), also found that mid-range ethanol blends reduce harmful tailpipe emissions. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (11/27/07) - A new report by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) indicates the Global Warming impacts on the Great Lakes will likely be increased unless inadequate regional water laws are strengthened to prevent water diversion. The report is called Climate Change and Great Lakes Water Resources. It warns that a warming climate is likely to reduce Great Lakes water supply while increasing water demand within the region. WISCREPORT.COM (11/13/07) - What started as perhaps a stretch goal set a year ago—all hospitals in Wisconsin becoming tobacco-free campus wide by November 15, 2007—is almost a reality. Now, 96 percent—123 in all—of Wisconsin’s hospitals are tobacco-free campus wide. In late 2006, the Wisconsin Hospital Association Board of Directors recommended that 100 percent of hospitals become tobacco-free by the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout, November 15, 2007. WISCREPORT.COM (10/31/07) - Invenergy Wind LLC (Invenergy) announced the successful closing of construction and term debt financing for its Forward Energy wind farm in Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties in Wisconsin. The Forward Energy project was the first wind project to be permitted through the State Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) permit process.
