At the same time, many Americans favor stricter control of guns, particularly hand guns, although this number has decreased somewhat in the past few years. WISCREPORT.COM (04/23/2010) - The Wisconsin State Assembly has passed a Senate Bill designed to increase public safety. Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says it creates a process to compel offenders who have failed to fulfill their legal obligations, to submit DNA specimens to the data bank. By having a more complete data bank of DNA information it is expected that the job of law enforcement will be swifter and more accurate. WISCREPORT.COM (04/22/2010) - A federal court has banned eight companies and their principals from selling credit repair and mortgage relief services, and ordered them to pay more than 7.5 million dollars for deceiving consumers throughout the United States. the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged seven of the companies and three officers with making false promises that they would improve consumers’ credit scores by removing negative information on credit reports. WISCREPORT.COM (03/25/2010) - The United States Senate has approved a package of Fixes to the historic health care reform bill that President Obama signed into law Tuesday. The Senate vote on the Fixes was 56-43. The Fixes were sent to the Senate by the House following House approval of the Senate Health Reform bill last weekend. The Senate sent the Fixes package back to the House for a final Fixes vote due to some technical glitches in the Fixes that were uncovered in the Senate. WISCREPORT.COM (03/23/2010) - President Barack Obama has signed the Senate Health Reform bill into law, making good on a campaign promise that helped him get elected. The road to signing day was bumpy, slow and frustrating over more than a year since President Obama was sworn into office in January of 2009. Several provisions in the new law came from Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/26/2010) - Nearly 50 foreign nationals were arrested in central and western Wisconsin during a week-long enforcement action targeting criminal aliens and immigration fugitives. This operation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, and the U.S. Border Patrol in Duluth, Minnesota. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/01/2010) - Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin (ABC WI) filed an injunction Friday, January 29, 2010, in Dane County Circuit Court to prevent the implementation of a new law requiring contractors to electronically file extensive payroll data when working on public works projects. The law, adopted last May as part of the budget bill, became effective this January. The association says it unfairly treats non-union contractors differently than union contractors. The state Republican Party director suggests the Sherman appointment was payback for past vote switching, and the Republican running for his seat alleges Sherman accepted the judgeship because he would have a hard time defeating his opponent. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (11/18/2009) - The Wisconsin Supreme Court has voted to accept seven new cases. Among the cases is a case involving who should pay the taxes on a multi-million dollar inheritance after a young girl was named to receive the large sum when her godfather died. The estate said the inheritor should pay, but the young girl and her parents said the estate should pay. The estate paid, then sued the girl and her parents for reimbursement. Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold says the program has been a boost to local economies, and is pleased to see it continue. Kohl is second in seniority among Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is responsible for conducting the hearings as the Senate engages in its Constitutional role to advise and consent on Supreme Court nominations. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (06/16/2009) - A 34 year old Watertown, Wisconsin man has been sentenced to twenty years on child pornography charges. The sentence stems from an incident that federal attorneys say took place in Marshall, Wisconsin in 2008. The man pleaded guilty to the charge of using a minor to produce child pornography after the prosecution obtained a copy of a videotape that showed the man fondling a girl under twelve years old. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/17/2009) - A Dane County jury has found a pharmaceutical manufacturer defrauded the Wisconsin Medicaid program by reporting grossly inflated and fraudulent prices. In a case brought by the Wisconsin Department of Justice against Pharmacia, after a two-week trial, the jury determined that Pharmacia should pay $9 million to compensate the state for its monetary losses. Lambda Legal and ARCW represent Melody Rose who experienced health problems with her gallbladder while incarcerated at Taycheedah Correctional Institution in Fond du Lac. The committee is a bipartisan, inter-branch body. The group's mission is to examine why Wisconsin’s prison population is growing and how the state can reduce recidivism and increase public safety. Matuszczak and Shoreline Contracting Services, Inc. are to pay $75,000 in forfeitures and surcharges for violating Wisconsin water pollution laws by failing to follow permit requirements governing a bluff stabilization project along Lake Michigan in Mequon, Ozaukee County. Milwaukee County Circuit Judge John Siefert has filed a constitutional challenge in federal court in Madison against a Wisconsin regulation barring judges from belonging to political parties. Judges are elected in Wisconsin on a non-partisan basis, and a provision of the Wisconsin Code of Judicial Conduct prohibits individuals from belonging to a political party while serving as a judge or running for judicial office. The one hour debate will take place March 25th between Justice Louis Butler and Judge Michael Gableman. It will be held at the State Bar Center in Madison. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/25/028) - While awareness of human trafficking is not widespread, the number of victims in Wisconsin is far greater than previously thought, according to a new study by the Office of Justice Assistance. Over 200 cases of victims forced into sex acts or labor services in Wisconsin were reported in a survey of nearly 400 sexual assault service providers and justice system agencies. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (02/15/08) - State Assembly Representative Gary Sherman of Port Wing, Wisconsin, has joined the growing list of state leaders who have issued statements of endorsement for Senator Barack Obama. Sherman, a past president of the State Bar of Wisconsin, has been representing the 74th Assembly District in the Ashland - Bayfield area of the state since 1998. He was elected vice chairman of Wisconsin Assembly Democrats in 2003 and 2005. Sherman says Obama can bridge the partisan divide and change federal lawmaking to be a positive force toward the quality of lives in Wisconsin and the United States again. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (12/15/07) - An inmate at the Green Bay Correctional Institution has been convicted of threatening the lives of the judge and a lead witness in the trial that put him in prison in the first place. In 2002, 26 year old Bobby Salas was convicted in Pierce County of sexual assault and aggravated battery. Salas later wrote a letter threatening the lives of the judge who presided at his Pierce County trial, and the lead investigator who testified against him at that trial. WISCONSINREPORT.COM (11/24/07) - A U.S. District Court judge has found television infomercial star Kevin Trudeau in contempt of court for violating a 2004 permanent injunction. The Court found that Trudeau violated the permanent injunction when he misrepresented the contents of his book, The Weight Loss Cure They Don’t Want You to Know About, in several infomercials. WISCREPORT.COM (11/8/07) - Senator Julie Lassa (D – Stevens Point) has announced that Senate Bill 260, “Angie’s Law”, to strengthen the penalties for strangulation, received a public hearing in the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Corrections yesterday (11/7/07). “Angie’s Law” will strengthen the law to allow prosecutors to charge batterers with felonies instead of misdemeanors. WISCREPORT.COM (11/7/07) - The Outagamie County Circuit Court has ordered former deputy treasurer-bookkeeper for the City of Seymour to pay $589,695 in restitution to the city in connection with an embezzlement scheme she carried out while employed there. Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says 46 year old Carolyn M. Austin of Depere, Wisconsin, also is to serve 5 years in prison and ten years under extended supervision. WISCREPORT.COM (10/13/07) - The Wisconsin Supreme Court has agreed to hear 16 new cases. The cases include one involving securities fraud. Another involves whether a defendant is entitled to sentence credit against a new offense for time he spent in custody as a result of an extended supervision hold, and others.
