WISCONSINREPORT.COM (08/30/2010) - The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is seeking nominations for the third annual Wisconsin Woman Veteran of the Year Award. The award will be presented during the Women Veterans Conference being held October 22-24 at Fort McCoy. The award recognizes women veterans who have compiled a record of exemplary service as a military service member, a veteran, and an outstanding member of the community.
The 2009 award recipient was Marjorie Marshman of Madison, who joined the Service December 1943 and left January 1946. Marshman was a Clerk Typist and worked at Cherry Point, North Carolina after attending boot camp at Camp LeJeune. She left the Marine Corps with the rank of Corporal.
Marshman belongs to the Madison Veterans Firing Squad, American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Marine Corp League, Madison Veterans Council, Dane County Veterans Service Commission, AMVETS, VA Hospital Volunteer, Pearl Harbor Association and WIMSA.
She is very active in all the organizations, especially as Chaplain of the Madison Veterans Firing Squad. She presides over the greatest honor of presenting the final recognition of the eulogy and flag presentation to the families for 125 funerals annually.
Nominations for the new winner of the Wisconsin Woman Veteran of the Year Award will be accepted from any Wisconsin resident, veteran, County Veterans Service Officer or veterans service organization or group.
Nominations may be submitted at any time during the year for the annual award.
Completed nomination forms for the 2010 award must be received no later than September 30.
Forms must be submitted in writing, with a narrative not to exceed 500 words, explaining why the veteran is being nominated for the award. Those nominations not selected may be retained for future award consideration.
