WISCONSINREPORT.COM (08/26/2010) - The political and media climate of hate and division in the United States has developed to an intensity that alarms some people who fear what could result. This climate of potentially destructive rhetoric has prompted words of caution from the editor of WisconsinReport.com, which has a policy of publishing the Real Truth of the story, not an As We See It version of the truth. He suggests that everyone in the U.S. should remember that the strength of this country lies in what he calls, the Us Word.
OUR STRENGTH LIES IN THE US WORD
A Garylook Opinion
by Gary W. Morgan

Every once in awhile, it seems that we, the individual people of the United States of America, need a reminder that we, each, are more than individuals. We are, each, part of a country called the United States, which, gives us, each, the right to be different, to follow our individual needs and wants. But, we each, for the good of the perpetuation of the country, should remember, collectively, we are one people.
No matter what our color, religion, political affiliation, class status, ethnicity, etc., we need to be more than We and Me vs. Them. We must be part of The Us Word.
About 99 percent of what is published in WisconsinReport.com, our online news publication about People, Places, Politics, Events and Activities of interest to our readers inside and outside of the state, is about what is happening that is newsworthy at the time. Our news stories try to present only the facts, without our opinion flavoring the facts. In other words, we try to make it about the Real Truth, not Our Version of The Truth. But, I fear that, perhaps, a time for this Opinion Piece, has, sadly come upon us.
While going through the incoming email in my inbox today, I found some notes from my personal Facebook account that a couple of people had made some comments about something one of my nephews had posted on the site. Little did I know, at the time, that this would start my mental process to work, which would result in this Opinion Piece at WisconsinReport.com.
The original Facebook entry by my nephew, which started this whole process was, “Does anyone remember that the U.S.A is for anyone that wants to be free to live the life they choose....what’s with all the hate everywhere!!!” To that I clicked on “Like” at Facebook, because, I agreed that some people in this country are allowing themselves to be deceived by hateful rhetoric, and led down a path that is dangerous, and frighteningly familiar.
It wasn’t until someone posted a comment to my nephew’s original entry that caused me to actually sit down to write the words you are now reading. The comment was “On the topic of hate everywhere...Please watch this video. I know you will enjoy this.” The writer of the comment included this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23X14HS4gLk .
I followed the link to You Tube and watched the nearly 18 minute video of a film that dated back to 1949. It was all about the incidents that led up to how World War II was started by Adolph Hitler and his Nazis, and how, if similar circumstances are allowed to happen in this country, that could lead to a division of U.S. citizens, heading into the 1950s, and what could be the downfall of the U.S. and the freedoms we enjoy in this country.
After I watched the film, I added these comments to the string after my nephew’s original entry, addressing my comment to the person who provided the You Tube link:
“Thank you, for bringing this old film to our attention. The things that are said during the course of the film could easily be said today by simply replacing some of the names of the guilty. And, the warning could easily be one that everyone in the USA should take to heart.
People who point fingers and declare that they are more "American" than the people they are pointing fingers at, should not be followed, blindly. This country is more than "we and me vs. them". The power of the United States, and the reason people around the world want to be like us, is that we are "us", all of us, and that all of us have the right to be different, individually, but, together we are "one".
It is difficult, at times, to attain that idea, so, we all should each remember, that the United States will only continue to be the best place to live, work and play, if we support each others right to be "different", while also remembering that our real power and attraction as a country, is that we, are "us".”
It would be a good idea for you, the reader, no matter whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Green Party, Tea Party, or any other party, member, to watch this black and white, relatively brief film from out of the past. It is as relevant today as it was in the post war period after the Second World War.
Follow this link to You Tube to view the great message, or, if the link doesn’t work for you on your computer, Copy and Paste the link into the address field of your browser. Click to go to the You Tube page, to see, what amounts to a “black and white”, stark message that we should all be reminded of, especially in the politically charged and sometimes, hate-mongering, climate, we, as a country, find ourselves in, right now.

Our strength, as a people, as a country, does lie in the Us Word. The fact that the initials of the United States, U.S., should, obviously, remind us, everyday, doesn’t seem to be enough for some people. They are the ones who say they are more American than certain “other” people, and, they are the ones who listen to and follow those who declare themselves all-knowing and all-better-than-thou. They are the ones who stir up the pot, then divide up the ingredients in piles, pitted against each other.
Come on, people. Stop demonizing and creating turmoil. We are all more alike, than we are different. We are, each, human beings, trying to do the best that we can with what we have available to us to accomplish that end. We are, after all, living in the United States, the U.S., and should be actively practicing devotees of the Us Word.
Let’s look for things about “Us” that are positive, not negative. Let’s aim for Better Solutions Through Positive Cooperation, Individual Dignity and Inclusion, rather than having a Divide and Conquer mentality. The latter will likely result in "Divided We Fall".
