WISCONSINREPORT.COM (04/10/2009) - What does a former Wisconsin State Senator do after he becomes a private citizen again? More than 300 individuals attended a landing party on April 4, 2009 in New Berlin, Wis. to witness the successful completion of former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien's one million mile ride on the same Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The feat earned him a world record from the Iron Butt Association.
The Iron Butt Association is an international group that oversees and governs safe, long-distance motorcycle riding challenges, which was presented at the event.
Among the attendees were a number of local elected officials, including Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas.
"I was thrilled to see Dave accomplish his dream of riding one million miles," said Milwaukee County Executive Walker. "This was a historic day for Wisconsin as we laid claim to a world record."
Hupy & Abraham, S.C. was the sole sponsor of the ride, providing more than $5,000 to offset the travel and maintenance costs. The law firm also presented a check for $5,000 to the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs at the event, the organization of Zien's choice, to honor his work as a Marine combat veteran and champion of veteran's rights.
"We have been eagerly awaiting the culmination of Dave's journey," said attorney Michael Hupy of Hupy & Abraham, S.C. "It was a monumental occasion to see him cap the million mile mark in Wisconsin."
Attorney Hupy rode along on Zien's motorcycle and captured footage of the historic moment as his odometer turned over to all zeros, marking the one million mile achievement.
Zien was also joined by John "Rogue" Herlihy, a Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member, Dan Stephans, Iron Butt rider, and Tony Sanfelipo, Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member, founder of ABATE of Wisconsin and 16-year employee of Hupy & Abraham, S.C., as he traveled the final leg of his journey.
Dozens of Wisconsin Patriot Guard riders escorted Zien on a route lined with over 100 American flags as he approached the landing party.
Harley-Davidson is expected to present Zien with a new motorcycle, and the million mile bike will be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame.
Zein is a former Wisconsin State Senator from the Eau Claire - Chippewa Falls area in westeran Wisconsin.
