Not Over Yet: Wisconsin 21st Senate District Will Have A Recall Recount
WISCONSINREPORT.COM (06/15/2012) - State Senator Van Wanggaard of Racine, Wisconsin has decided to call for a recount of all votes in the 21st senate district Recall Election held June 5th. Following a customary official canvass, the apparent victor, Democrat John Lehman, is ahead by 834 votes. Van Wanggaard says his call for a recount is not a delaying tactic. He just wants the final result to be accurate, without question.
Wanggaard notes that many people have demanded that he ask for a recount, but, he points out that he is not asking for the recount just because they have demanded that he do so.
"I have never done something just because it was demanded of me", Wanggaard said.
"Over the past week, I have thought long and hard about what is in the best interests of the 21st Senate District. I have spoken with voters, supporters and elected officials seeking their input. Unanimously, they have supported a recount", Wanggaard explained.
However, he says, something that one of the voters he spoke with reminded him of, was a big deciding factor.
"One of those voters reminded me of my late friend, Judge Dennis Barry. That voter reminded me how Judge Barry was once down on election night by 700 some votes, and asked for a recount. In the end, Judge Barry won by more than 90 votes," Wanggaard said.
Wanggaard also some of the people he has talked with feel "for a variety of reasons" that their "votes were disenfranchised on election night".
Wanggaard sys he would like everyone to "move on from the bitterness that has divided this state as a result of the recall elections".
"This is not about maintaining power or denying Democrats power. There are no 'secret plans' for a special legislative session during this recount, and no votes scheduled", Wanggaard assures.
Senate Republican Leader Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau supports Van Wanggaard’s decision to pursue a recount.
“Nearly 72,000 ballots were cast in the state senate election, and the margin between the two candidates is hovering around one percent. The recount is a tool available to candidates to ensure that the final results are accurate, and that the integrity of the election process has been upheld", Fitzgerald said.
“We look forward to a speedy and efficient recount process, and hope that when the recount is concluded, voters of the old 21st Senate District will have peace of mind that their votes were properly counted," Senate Republican Leader Scott Fitzgerald said.
