Democrat Lehman Gains 55 Votes In Racine County Senate Recall Canvass
WISCONSINREPORT.COM (06/13/2012) - State Senator Elect John Lehman is likely to take his seat in the Wisconsin State Senate chambers soon. The Racine County canvass of the Recall Election resulted in an additional 55 votes for Democrat Lehman over Republican Senator Van Wanggaard. The canvass increases the margin to 834 votes between the candidates.
Senator-elect John Lehman says after yesterday's canvass of the votes from last Tuesday, June 5, 2012, he's "even more confident" in the victory for his candidacy and for Wisconsin Democrats, who will gain a one vote majority in the State Senate as a result of that victory.
"Thank you to all the election workers – especially our hard working clerks and poll workers throughout Racine County," Senator-elect John Lehman said.
"I look forward to getting to work in Madison and focusing on new jobs for Racine County residents", Lehman added.
Senate Majority Leader Mark Miller is expressing his pleasure on the certificaiton of election results in the 21st Senate District.
"The votes are all in and it's official, John Lehman has won the election in the 21st Senate District," Senator Mark Miller said.
"Now that we have seen that Senator-elect Lehman has added 55 votes to his winning total, I hope Senator Van Wanggaard will concede that this election is over", Democrat Miller added.
"It is fitting that the official vote total comes on the day of the beer and brat summit. I hope Senate Republicans will take Governor Walker's pledge to move past the elections and accept the results rather than resort to the political games we hear they are planning to try to hold onto their power," Miller continued.
"We have done many smooth transfers of power before in the middle of terms and I hope Senate Republicans will not resort to new partisan depths to try to overturn the balance of power that the voters have clearly asked for over the last two years", Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Miller said.
"Governor Walker has said numerous times, that with the elections over, we are not opponents. It's time to focus on job creation for our state and move forward together", said Miller.
Senator Miller notes that Senate Democrats stand ready to work with Republicans on the many issues facing our state and hopes that Republicans will honor the canvass of votes cast in the 21st assembly district in the June 5th Recall election.
"It would be unfortunate if the Senate Republicans want to stand alone as the one group that doesn't want to work together", Senator Miller pointed out.
Senator Van Wanggaard hasn't yet conceded. His camp is weighing the situation. There is a possibility that he and fellow Republicans will decide to pay the more than $600 fee in order to call a recounting of all votes.
If there is no recount, Senator-elect John Lehman could be sworn in as soon as the Government Accountability Board (GAB) certifies results. The date of the GAB certification depends on when all counties get their canvass results in. GAB must certify results no later than June 23 at the latest.
