Former Wisconsin State Senator Roger Breske Has Died At 73
WISCONSINREPORT.COM (04/03/2012) - A former Northern Wisconsin State Senator, who resigned from that position to take a job as Wisconsin Railroad Commissioner, has died of an apparent heart attack. Roger Breske was 73. When he was in the Wisconsin Senate, he served the 12th State Senate District.
Breske, from Eland, was a former bar owner and a Wisconsin Tavern League president. Breske represented the 12th Wisconsin Senate District from 1990 until 2008, when Governor Jim Doyle appointed him Wisconsin Railroad Commissioner.
State Senator Jim Holperin from Merrill, who now represents the 12th State Senate District, commented that Breske was a sincere State Senator with "a zest for helping people get what they wanted from their government".
Holperin, from Eagle River, was a member of the Wisconsin Assembly before becoming 12th District State Senator after Breske decided to become Wisconsin Railroad Commissioner.
"Roger served his state with passion and distinction for over two decades, after committing his life to public service late in his career," Senator Holperin said.
"His sincerity and zest for helping people get what they wanted from their government made him a great Senator and his commitment to people's needs assured that he never lost an election," Holperin continued.
"No one could work a crowd like Roger Breske because no one sincerely liked people as much as Roger did. He set everyone at ease and earned the voter's trust and good will in return," Senator Holperin said.
"His legislative accomplishments focused on economic development for the many small towns of his 12th Senate District, and the dozens of bills passed under his authorship assured that the north had good roads, thriving main streets, successful farm operations, world class recreation trail systems, attractive tourism destinations and working people who were treated fairly by state law," Holperin pointed out.
Senator Holperin feels that "everyone who met Roger Breske had a friend in him".
"Wisconsin has lost a great Senator, a committed public servant, and a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and community leader," Holperin said.
"I was privileged to have known Roger, and I will miss him," Senator Jim Holperin added.
Democrat Roger Breske was replaced as Wisconsin Railroad Commissioner by Republican Governor Scott Walker when Breske retired that position in 2011. Walker named former Democratic State Senator Jeff Plale the new Railroad Commissioner replacing Breske.
